Systematic Design For Elearning

Friday, June 30th, 2006

Today, technology has invaded almost all aspects of our life, for better or for worse. Though technology’s role in our life is debatable to some extent (which is also not the scope of this article), its happy union with education is definitely something to cheer for. The accentuation of education through proper application of technology is termed as e learning. Having come of age over the years with drastic leapfrogs in technology, e learning has today evolved into a great learning platform that is radically different from that of the conventional learning techniques, conceivably in a better way.

Just as there are myriad approaches to conventional methodical teaching, e learning, too has varied approaches to it. Instead of dwelling upon the various approaches to e learning, we will here shed light on one of the most popular one. Widely known as Instructional Systems Design (ISD), it is also known by other names such as Instructional Systems Design & Development (ISDD), the Systems Approach to Training (SAT), or just Instructional Design (ID). Starting with the assessment of a student’s expectations from the courseware, it leads the student through a step by step guide involving the design and development of the training material, and finally allowing the instructor to gauge the efficacy of the program through student assessment.

Definition
A juxtaposition of some of the most popular definitions of instructional design or systematic design for e learning gives a crystal clear idea about what it exactly is, and an insight into its core process of learning. At the nucleus of an instructional design approach is the importance it accords to learning instead of technology. Learning requirements and objectives are first analyzed, and a delivery system, in conjunction with these needs is developed. The instructional design methodology was first put to use in World War II and became immensely popular in the years thereafter. It found place in corporate training, military training, textbook authoring, and web/computer based learning. A systematic design for e learning entails continuous assessment and response. Instructional Design is based on theoretical and practical research in the areas of cognition, educational psychology, and problem solving. All in all, instructional design is essentially a learning framework that simply organizes learning resources to enhance the learning process to reach defined goals.

Advantages of systematic approach to e learning
Unlike a classroom setting for learning, a systematic approach to e learning benefits the e learning process in more ways than one.

Systematic approach allows individuals other than the instructors, such as other learners, or students wishing to take up the course, to view and weigh up the content, discussions, interactions, etc.

Systematic approach makes objective assessment of e learning quality possible.

Systematic approach guarantees the examination of vital theories through apposite presentation and pertinent learning.

Systematic approach makes e learning process more transparent, thereby bequeathing quality upon it.

Systematic approach immensely helps the students of online programs through good content presentation and interactive sessions.

Systematic approach renders distance learning more effective due to its interactive characteristic and transparency compared to conventional distance learning programs.

Systematic approach provides students with the liberty of picking the instructional framework instead of the instructional framework governing student’s choice of course.

Systematic approach builds a comfortable link between pedagogy and technology, thereby allowing a change in the plan of instruction depending upon the student response, which cannot be achieved by technology alone.

Systematic approach to e learning is enhanced by well organized subject content and well thought out strategies for teaching.

Systematic approach helps in blending the material offered by different instructors and different courseware.

Systematic approach begins and ends with the learner and his experience.

The development of instructional material is a time consuming process and, hence, a major concern. Systematic approach to e learning accelerates the development process to come up with the most effective way of content presentation, and a structure to navigate through the courseware.

Various models of systematic approach to e learning
A model of any process is a representation of standard occurrences, thus restricting its blind replication in a real life situation. The review of various models of the systematic approach only reiterates the fact that different ones are effective in designing different courses, ranging from a science course to a people management course.

ADDIE - This is an ellipsis of Analyze, Design, Development, Implement, and Evaluate. One of the most popular models of instructional design, it is frequently used by instructors for academic courses.

Dick and Carey model - It is based on the concept of breaking instructions into modules. The instruction material targets the skills and knowledge that is intended to be taught.

Minimalism - Developed by J.M. Carroll, this model is useful for computer based learning. It emphasizes the importance of meaningful and self contained learning activities, execution of realistic projects by students, error recognition and recovery of training material and a tangible link between training and actual system.

Algo Heuristic - It is based on the assumption that all pedagogical activities can be categorized into algorithmic, semi algorithmic, heuristic or semi heuristic. Once a cognitive activity can be put under a certain head, its specific systems act as the foundation of the systematic approach.

Robert Gagne’s model - This model is considered to be the pioneer, in which many other models find their genesis. It subscribes to the belief that events and categories of learning form a framework that can be used to account the learning conditions.

Epathic model - A five step design model, it includes – observation, capturing data, reflection and analysis, brainstorming for solutions, and developing prototypes.

Rapid prototyping model - Here, learners, and subject matter experts constantly communicate with instructional designers and prototypes in a cyclic manner.

Conclusion
E learning is plagued with a number of maladies including high drop out rates, learner resistance and poor learner performance. These glitches can be taken care of through the systematic approach. Its various other benefits make it a unanimous choice for organizations and institutions alike.

ABC Drugs – Efficient Medications Used in the Treatment of Multiple Sclerosis

Friday, June 30th, 2006

Today’s treatments for multiple sclerosis primarily aim to slow down the progression of the disease, prevent the development of further complications and alleviate the existing symptoms. At present there is no specific cure for multiple sclerosis and thus no medical treatment can completely eliminate the disease. In addition, the medications used in multiple sclerosis treatments can’t reverse the nerve damage caused by multiple sclerosis; they can only prevent future damage by minimizing the destructive potential of various factors that sustain the disease (multiple sclerosis involves an autoimmune response of the body, determining the immune system to destroy healthy nerve cells instead of intruding infectious agents). However, patients who receive the appropriate treatment timely and in the right doses can live normal, active lives and gain control over their symptoms.

The medications that have proved very efficient in controlling the progression of multiple sclerosis and alleviating its symptoms are Avonex, Betaseron and Copaxone. Popular under the name of “ABC drugs”, Avonex, Betaseron and Copaxone are extensively used to counter symptoms such as fatigue and muscular weakness, manifestations that have been associated with multiple sclerosis and various other resembling autoimmune disorders. Although Avonex, Betaseron and Copaxone all have distinctive characteristics, they all have the same goal – to reduce the damage caused by the dysfunctional immune system to healthy nervous cells by various biological mechanisms. Administered in the appropriate dose, each distinctive medication from the category of “ABC drugs” can reduce the frequency and intensity of multiple sclerosis by up to a third.

Avonex (Beta-interferon-1a) – This medication is commonly used in the treatment of multiple sclerosis and is administered under the form of intramuscular injections. Avonex can substantially reduce inflammation at the level of the affected nerve cells and can slow down the process of demyelization (the process of myelin destruction). Administered to patients in early stages of multiple sclerosis, Avonex can prevent the occurrence of complications such as dysfunctions of the motor system (which includes muscles and connective tissues), loss of balance, visual and hearing problems, speech problems, memory problems and other similar cognitive impairments (occur when various areas of the brain are affected by multiple sclerosis).

Although Avonex can produce side-effects such as fever, chills, muscular discomfort and pain, these symptoms are not very intense and only last for a few hours after the injection. The side-effects of Avonex can be controlled by using ibuprofen or acetaminophen-based drugs before or soon after each injection.

Betaseron (Beta-interferon-1b) – This drug is also very effective in controlling the symptoms of multiple sclerosis and reducing the risks of complications. Betaseron is administered under the form of non-painful subcutaneous injections and is well tolerated by most patients. Occasionally, Betaseron can produce side-effects such as skin irritation at the site of injection, moderate fever and fatigue. The drug is the primary choice in the treatment of secondary-progressive multiple sclerosis, a subtype of the disease characterized by gradual progression.

Copaxone (Glatiramer acetate or Copolymer-1) – Included in the treatment of multiple sclerosis, this medication is also very efficient in alleviating symptoms and preventing the occurrence of complications. The drug is delivered under the form of subcutaneous injections. Compared to the previously described drugs, Copaxone has very few side-effects and is very well tolerated by most patients. Copaxone is considered to be a safe medication and is suitable for most categories of patients with multiple sclerosis.

From Rags To Riches Via The Net

Friday, June 30th, 2006

Have you ever dreamed of making a fortune from the internet? I am fairly sure many of you have heard about people like Alex Tew from the milliondollarhomepage and thought something like, why didn’t I think of that? I have thought similar things but am sure that I can earn vast sums of money from the net as I have seen a good friend of mine who has basically gone from rags to riches all via just one website.

My friend’s name is Peter. Peter was not exactly a model student when he was at school and left education at the age of sixteen with only a couple of examination passes. For the next few years he drifted between jobs and it seemed that he could not settle into any form of career.

Peter has never been very poor but is just an average type of guy who struggled to pay all of his bills each month. He was not able to afford the luxuries such as a summer holiday or a nice car but this never really seemed to bother him.

Many people saw Peter as some sort of computer geek as that was all he ever spoke about. Ever since the birth of the internet Peter was hooked. He wanted to learn how to reach the top of the search engines and all other forms of web promotion and seo techniques.

Around ten years ago Peter decided to have his own website all about web marketing. This site is now a page rank eight and Peter is making a massive amount of money via selling text link ads and google adsense.

Peter has taught me a lot about the internet and web promotion and this gives me a lot of confidence about the future. We both really believe in article marketing and just wish we had more time to write etc.

What Makes a Good And Profitable Web Site?

Friday, June 30th, 2006

You need a web site to have an established and felt online presence. Your web site is just like the offline shop or business center of an offline business. An offline business man does most if not all of his business in his offline shop. An offline business man goes about with his complimentary or business card. The business card of an online salesman, business man, or marketer is his web site. But you don’t just need a web site you need a good web site. Interestingly, it is good web site that turns out to be a profitable web site. So it is a vicious circle – a good web site is a profitable web site and a profitable web site is a good web site!

A good and/or profitable web site must look good. It has to be easy to load; I hope you know as much as I do that people don’t like anything that wastes their time and money. Your web site must be reliable. It has to look professional. The font and background colors must be very nice, suitable, and captivating. The messages or the content of your web site should be concise and precise. You have to understand that nobody likes junks so you have to put quality content in your web site. Your web site should look more like a textbook; that is, it should have well defined table of contents.

Your web site should be maintained from time to time by putting new contents such as new products, new services, etc. I mean that you should preferably go for a dynamic web site which will automatically change your content based on changes to your business. One good thing about your good web site is that it can accommodate limitless information; so you have this entire world to put all the information you want to put on your web site.

I must tell you that no matter how powerful and professional your web site may seem to be you just have to promote it by using the search engines if you really want it to be profitable. Why? The people you want to visit your site have no other way of finding you except from or through the search engines, unless the visitors already know of your web site. The promotion of a web site by using the search engines is normally done through an online process called search engine optimization. The search engine optimization (SEO) is also normally done directly on your web site. You can also promote your site through paid or free classified advertising and more.

In summary, your web site is not yet good and profitable if it is not easy to load. Your web site can’t be profitable if it is not reliable. Your web site cannot be profitable if it does not look professional. Your web site cannot be profitable if you don’t promote it.

Perfect Valentine Venue for your Sweetheart

Friday, June 30th, 2006

You may kiss your sweetheart everyday several times at your home but Valentine’s day comes only once in a year. Valentine’s day dates are invaluable to tell your beloved how much you actually love him or her. As the date is special, the venue has to be unforgettable too. The ambiance, the surroundings have to be extremely romantic and suitable with the positive energies as per your Valentine’s temperament. So gift your Valentine the ideal date at an awesomely beautiful venue.

Do you know where Romeo and Juliet dated first? It was a ballroom during a ballet when their eyes met to each other for the first time. Adam and Eve first dated in the pure, sovereign and natural greenery of the garden of Eden. Julius Caesar and Marcus Antonio both dated Cleopatra during political upheaval at the castle of Cleopatra in Egypt. There are various other dating venues where our heroes and heroins dated first. Searching through the pages about St. Valentine some painfully romantic dating stories come in front. When we hug our sweetheart celebrating Valentine’s day we never remember the pathos of the jailer’s daughter who was fated to receive the Valentine wish first time ever in the world from St. Valentine just before he was going to hang and they dated in the jail. There was a romantic note signed ‘From your Valentine’ by St. Valentine himself. The magic of his holy being created another spell, just after his death; spring, the season of merrymaking started. Since that time the lovers started dating on 14th February.

Since there is no age bar for falling in love there are different age groups of lovers all round the globe. According to the age groups of people the taste of venue for dating naturally varies. The traditional and nostalgic minds like to fly over the vales and mountains of Scotland countryside. The city of Glasgow is reputed worldwide because the couples believe that St. Valentine still resides at the churches hereby and they call this place as the ‘City of Love’. Gretna Green, the sister city has also received the fame of being the ideal place to date and then marry your soul mates. Romantic love birds from England and other European countries come here in order to get married. During ages French castles of historic importance are also noted ethnic Valentine dating venue for couples. The ballerinas of castles and monuments around old boulevards of England, France, Ireland and Scotland are hugely famous and the most exclusive and expensive dating points for sophisticated couples.

Young Americans share different interests than the middle aged couples in case of choosing a perfect venue for their partners on Valentine’s day. The new age youngsters love to spend valentine’s day parties in the discs with jumbo-box stereophonic Dolby digital sound effect of rock music. The most popular and hep gen-Y culture now a days tend to celebrate the Valentine’s day parties at the malls, restaurants and other popular hang out spots for dating. Whereas some middle aged busiest working American couples celebrates Valentine’s dates at the warmest and cozy corners of their own sweet homes. Some order delicious menu from favorite restaurants, besides some like to casually roam around the places they dated earlier and cherish the cups of their nostalgia. Pittsberg is one of the hottest choice for the couples of all age because of its photogenic landscapes and worldly reputed inns and restaurants. London is another hotcake in the list of Valentine date venue. The train and air tickets to London from all sides around the globe is overflowed with bookings and reservations during the valentine’s day.

Actually its up to the person, your valentine that he or she would like to get a wonderful date at the heavenly places on earth or at the rooftop of your home itself. It will be the greatest joy of the world if your valentine finds the venue awesomely attractive and beautiful. If it pleases him or her too much that she feels like thanking you with a sweetest kiss, that means you are greatly successful in planning out the perfect dating. After all you know your beloved the most. So its your task to find out a perfect and attractively apt venue for celebrating the day to make it an all time memorable one.

The University of Internet Marketing

Friday, June 30th, 2006

I know that you may know all the universities in Europe, in America, in the United States, in Asia, in the Middle-East, in Australia, in Africa, and so on. I also know that you may know that people go into universities not to play but to learn one or two things that will help them to be profitable to themselves, their families, and their society at large. People go into the secular universities in order to become better people at the end of the day. Some people go into the university not just to grab knowledge but to come out with good certificate which can help them to become gainfully employed. And the reason why they want to be employed is not because they so much like to work but primarily because they want to make some real good and big money. Yes, everybody likes money!

You may or may not know that in every university there must be faculties, departments, colleges and so on. For example, there are faculties such as the faculty of social sciences, the faculty of physical sciences, the faculty of biological sciences; the faculty of medical and pharmaceutical sciences, and the faculty of arts. The faculties usually consist of colleges. For instance, a faculty such as the faculty of medical and pharmaceutical sciences may comprise of the college of medicine which is specifically for those that are aspiring to become medical personnel. So if you want to become a medical doctor you have to find your way to the college of medicine.

In the same vein, there are three colleges in the “University of Internet Marketing”. These are colleges you must pass through if you really want to be a good, seasoned, tested, and trusted internet marketer. You know that all universities collect admission and tuition fees from their students. But one good thing about the University of Internet marketing is that you are not asked to pay any fees. You are registered free of charge – no admission fees; no tuition fees! You just make sure that you pass the exams because if you don’t pass your exams you may keep being a student of the university for years, decades, and even centuries. However, the exams are so simple that anybody that actually makes up his or her mind to pass them can pass them without stress.

Now, what are the names of these three colleges? They are called the “College of Commitment,” the College of Credibility,” and the “College of Creativity.” Yes, you must by any means pass through the three colleges in the University of Internet Marketing and you must also allow the three colleges to pass through you.

Simply put, you need focus, relevant action, effort, integrity, honesty, workable or feasible ideas and morality in order to become a qualified and a first-class graduate in the University of Internet Marketing.

The Basic Theories of Internet Marketing

Friday, June 30th, 2006

Life is been governed by laws, principles, or theories. It follows that every business you do in life must be done in accordance with such relevant, established, and natural laws if you sincerely want to succeed.

In internet marketing, just like any other business, theories abound. The first theory in this context is called the theory of speed. This theory states that you must consider how fast your product or service is produced or delivered in comparison to your competitors’. This theory is very significant in the management of software development. Software programs are often expected to run fast.

As a matter of fact, if the delivery of your goods and services is faster than your competitors’ own in the same niche people will prefer your products and services to your competitors’. So you must, as a matter of necessity, consider the theory of speed when you are involving yourself in any area of internet marketing.

The second theory is known as the theory of cost. Dear Mr. Internet Marketer, the cost-effectiveness of a product or service you render is a very important determining factor in the school of internet marketing. Believe me, people like cheap products no matter how they pretend. So you must try as much as possible to make your goods and services to be “cheaper” than your rivals’ own. I advise you to check out the price of your competitors’ products and services in order to maintain a reasonable price. Strive as much as possible to ensure that you have a better price.

Thirdly, there is the theory of quality. Are you thinking of delivering inferior products to your customer? Then you should as well be thinking of becoming a failure in your chosen niche. If you ask me, your failure rate is 99.9 per cent; it then means that you are most likely to fail for just selling inferior products or rendering inferior services. Your products and services should be of very high quality if you really expect to make very high amount of money – you can only reap what you sow. Only thieves or criminals are known for taking what they do not deserve. Let me warn you before you lose out, even the poorest of all men like high quality goods and services – poverty notwithstanding.

Blended Learning - Old Wine In A New Bottle

Friday, June 30th, 2006

Before starting to define the concept of blended learning, its important to know the most unobtrusive fact about the concept - that it has been around in disguise for eons and its immortality is undisputable. Simply put, unblended learning is something unimaginable. Learning has always involved blending of different methods and only the uninitiated can think of a learning environment where a computer can carry out all the aspects of training without the assistance from other media. Though this term found entry into the e learning jargon only lately, we have been using blended learning since time immemorial. Teachers using different forms of exercises right from story telling and toys to using charts and reading aloud for training toddlers are using blended learning techniques.

Blended learning in corporate training

Blended learning fast seems to be replacing e learning in corporate training, if not elsewhere. Corporate training programs aim at improving revenue, reducing costs and enhance teamwork in general, rather than focusing on the individual development of employees. Learners, too, learn with a view to becoming effective at their jobs rather than for the sake of increasing knowledge. Keeping these trends in mind, blended learning can best address the needs of a corporate training program, since different sets of learners require different delivery methods. The key to enhance results lies in offering the perfect amalgam of media and delivery as per the requirement of a particular program. Learning experiences are categorized into steps in a blended learning model and the learner’s progression from one step to another keeps on building upon the previous learning experiences. This forms a ladder through which learners keep on climbing rung after rung to blossom into a tree of collaboration from the sapling of education. Organizations have graduated from the basic information exchange level to the level of expertise – all within scheduled time frames and fixed costs through blended learning techniques. A blended learning model allows the ease of combining either elements from a particular level, or complete levels to arrive at a single learning solution. The blend that a company selects depends upon various factors including requirements, costs, time on hand and available content.

Basic elements of blended learning

Broadly, blended learning models comprise of the following elements, mixed in varied proportions according to an organization’s requirements. Blended learning can be classified into

Learning through information

Learning through interaction

Learning through collaboration and

Learning through classroom experiences

E learning technology can be put to good use while learning through information, interaction and collaboration. This not only reduces cost attributed to enlarged periods of non productive activity on the part of the employees, commuting and employing instructors, but also creates reusable content, and reiterates core messages and concepts to ingrain them in the minds of the learners. At the same time, the classroom sessions develop interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate face to face.

Learning through information

Material based information is the first coherent step towards starting a learning program. Web based material can now be handed to the learners, thanks to e learning techniques, which can render the learning program easy to deliver and faster to implement. Making the information accessible all the time will give learners the liberty of scrolling through the content at their own convenience, which, in turn, will enhance understanding and enthusiasm.

Learning through interaction

The learner-instructor, learner-content, learner-learner, and learner-infrastructure interactions become all the more important in a blended learning environment. Web can assist all the above mentioned forms of interaction, which, together, help retain the knowledge that is acquired through information .Web simulations of real life situations allow learners to apply their knowledge practically, without the possibility of them affecting your business directly.

Learning through collaboration

Collaborative learning includes peer to peer discussions, conference calls, chat, team rooms and instant messaging. Technology has enhanced the concept of collaboration manifold, where learners, even though geographically remote, can communicate in real time. The collaborative environment also heightens the chances of collaboration between e learners and subject matter experts (SMEs).

Learning through classroom interactions

Conventional, tested and, by far, one of the most effective approaches to learning, classrooms are the best places to personally connect to peers and instructors. No technology can replace the advantages of this approach, which is exactly why no e learning or blended learning model will skip this element for any reason. But, as one would like to believe, blended learning has never attempted to replace classroom based learning. On the contrary, technology based learning takes care of the basic, mechanical and mundane aspects of learning to allow classroom based training centre around discussions on already learnt subject matter and behavioral and psychological modifications.

Bottomline

Blended learning involves the appropriate blend of varied components including courses, content portions, IM pings, blog feedback, and many other things. The ubiquitous problems of speed, scale and impact associated with most e learning models can be successfully solved by blended learning. Applying blended learning to all your learning needs will definitely leverage your organization vis a vis your competitors.

Rheumatoid Arthritis And Getting Help

Friday, June 30th, 2006

If you suffer from rheumatoid conditions like that of arthritis, it is increasingly important for you to get the help that you need in dealing with this condition. Although there are many people that don’t get the help they need, if you do, you will have the opportunity to lessen that pain that you feel and improve your overall well being and use of your body. Without help, the condition that you are facing can worsen, significantly. Even still, many times people avoid going to the doctor for fear that they will simply not find benefit, feel that it costs too much or are afraid of the diagnosis procedure. In all of these cases, it is still important to make it there.

Complications Can Arise For Those With Rheumatoid

If you do not get the care that you need, or your symptoms are beyond that of what can be helped (which really must be quite severe) then you are prone to developing complications of your condition. Those complications can range, greatly, but can include a number of things. As your arthritis continues to worsen, you are left with swollen joints that are painful to use. Your joints can become quite deformed, noticeably so. In addition to this, you are left with loss of use of that joint. Some doctors believe that if your don’t get help for your rheumatoid condition, this or others, you can end up with heart diseases as well. All of this comes about not because you can’t find improvement, but because you didn’t seek out the help and treatment that is available to you.

What Happens At The Doctor’s Office?

When you go in to see the doctor, he or she will want to know about your symptoms. They will ask you a number of questions including the severity of the pain that you are in, the location of the pain as well as when it hurts the most. In addition to this, a physical exam will be done. Your doctor wants to see the range of motion that you have. He or she wants to feel the location that is suffering from pain. They will also want to take a history of your medical experiences if they don’t have one on file. All of this information points the doctor into the direction of making a decision.

Usually, there is more to the screening for rheumatoid conditions than just this. Your doctor will want to do a blood test on you. This blood test will be an erythrocyte sedimentation rate or ESR, which will explain to the doctor if there are any inflammations happening in your body. In addition to this screening, one called a rheumatoid arthritis blood test will be taken which tells your doctor if you have this abnormal antibody in your blood.

In addition to this type of exam, an x-ray will usually be done to confirm what your doctor probably already knows, that you have a rheumatoid condition and which type it is. From that understanding, you both will work towards finding treatment options that simply work for treating the pain and the loss of motion that you feel.

Greg Marsh is an acclaimed writer on medical matters, and has written extensively on the subjects of Rheumatoid Arthritis, Rheumatology and Rheumatism.
