Skin Bleaching Alternatives to Hydroquinone: Medical Comparisons of Their Effectiveness

Tuesday, July 31st, 2007

In a matter of days, the Food and Drug Administration could decide to ban products containing the popular skin lightening agent hydroquinone. The anticipation of the FDA’s ruling on the safety of this skin lightening agent provides an opportunity to compare the safety and effectiveness of alternative skin brightening ingredients to hydroquinone.

Skin lightening agents to treat conditions like age spots, melasma and acne marks. Skin bleachers interfere with at least one of the numerous steps involved in creating the pigment melanin, and bringing this color to the surface of the skin. Sources of unconventional skin lightening agents include vitamins, fruit acids, botanical extracts and novel chemicals.

Niacinamide, a derivative of vitamin B3, rests as a popular skin whitening agent in natural cosmetics. Niacinamide prevents melanin from entering the upper layers of the skin. A study in the British Journal of Dermatology found that a cream containing five percent niacinamide noticeably brightened the faces Japanese women.

Similarly, ascorbic acid, a form of vitamin C, exhibits a skin lightening capacity. Investigators discovered that combing ascorbic acid with lactic acid noticeably lightened age spots and skin discolorations on the skin of patients with medium to dark skin tones after three months of treatment and reported their findings in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science.

Another antioxidant, glutathione, has surfaced as skin brightener. Glutathione is made in the body with the help of a selenium and protein balanced diet. A report in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science noted the effectiveness of glutathione as a skin lightening agent. But, the amount of glutathione needed in topical products to induce skin lightening is not yet standardized.

Like glutathione, grape seed extract is another radical scavenger with skin lightening potential. Researchers in Nago City, Japan found that feeding guinea pigs foods containing one percent grape seed extract reversed skin darkening the resulted from UV exposure. Dosages of one percent vitamin C did not elicit the same skin brightening effect in the pigs. The investigators released their findings in Pigment Cell Research.

While not a vitamin, arbutin is a naturally occurring hydroquinone found in plants. Moreover, a food analysis published in the Journal of Toxicology and Environmental Health Analysis observed significant amounts of arbutin in wheat products, pears, and coffee and tea.

Like hydroquinone, arbutin disrupts the reactions that lead to the formation of melanin. Yet a study in the Journal of Dermatological Science deemed arbutin less effective than niacinamide or kojic acid at limiting the production of melanin.

To expand skin lightening agents beyond botanicals and vitamins, researchers at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine synthesized their own version of hydroquinone called deoxyArbutin (dA). DeoxyArbutin blocks the formation of melanocytes, the cells that make melanin.

After 12 weeks of treatment, deoxyArubtin reduced the appearance of solar lentigines, age spots, on the skin of fair toned people. However the cosmetic improvement on patients with dark skin tones was slight.

Besides deoxyArubtin, exfoliating acids provide another form of skin lightening.

Researchers at the Makati Medical Center in Manila, Philippines compared a 20% azelaic acid treatment to a 2% hydroquinone treatment for melasma. Over a period of 24 weeks, 73% of the azelaic acid patients, compared with 19% of the hydroquinone patients, experienced good to excellent results, based on the reduction of melasma color intensity and blemish size. Still, both drugs had the tendency to cause initial mild to moderate irritation to the skin.

Regardless of the FDA’s ruling on hydroquinone, numerous skin lightening options remain on the market. Some of the downsides of alternatives to hydroquinone include increased expense for more exotic skin lightening agents and longer waiting periods to see satisfactory changes in the skin.

Nevertheless, studies have shed light on ways to speed the effectiveness of skin lightening agents. For example, a recent experiment published in Skin Research and Technology found that combining skin lightening creams that contain niacinamide and vitamin C with ultrasound enhanced the absorption level of the creams and increased the rate of skin lightening as compared to using the same treatment without ultrasound.

In all, as the FDA deliberates over the safety of hydroquinone, consumers can rest assured that effective skin lightening alternatives exists and new ones are undergoing tests in labs.

Telecommuting Proposal-How Many Days a Week of Remote Work is Best?

Tuesday, July 31st, 2007

If you’re excited about the prospect of telecommuting, you may have blissful visions
of working from home five days a week, with occasional trips into the office for
meetings.

Or maybe your notion is to propose telecommuting five days a week, leaving you room
to negotiate fewer days if the full-time, work-from-home pitch is rejected.

Wise strategies? Or, career peril?

Telecommuting - Who’s Doing What and Why?

First, consider the norm. Most employed telecommuters work from home one to three
days a week and go to the office the remaining days.

The reasons may be many and varied, but here are two common ones.

Face time: Right or wrong, face time still has measurable impact on how you and
your work are perceived.

Without enough visibility, access, and concurrent involvement, you will undoubtedly
miss out on information and opportunities that maintain and advance your career.

“Out of sight/out of mind” is real, so regular weekly “appearances” are still important.

Most bosses, however willing they are to allow their employees to telecommute, still
want face-to-face communication on a regular basis. It provides them with a degree
of needed comfort and control.

Bottom-line: Your boss is likely to be more agreeable to your telecommuting proposal
if you suggest one or two days a week working from home to start.

If you feel you need negotiating room, propose two or three days a week and negotiate
one or two days.

Isolation: This is a common experience among telecommuters.

Even if you have a dreadful commute to the office or work very well independently,
working from home alone five days a week, week in and week out, is very isolating.

Camaraderie and professional interaction are necessary energizers in the actual work
output and the workday of most people.

Bottom-line: Going into the office two or three days a week makes a measurable difference
in keeping telecommuters feeling connected.

Telecommuting Proposal Strategy Tip

Propose one, two, or at the most, three telecommuting days. One day is a safe start,
especially if your boss is apprehensive; it makes for a good trial.

Oh-and don’t suggest Mondays.

Strapless Heart Rate Monitor - All the Gain, None of the Pain!

Tuesday, July 31st, 2007

There are pros and cons you must consider when purchasing a strapless heart rate monitor. As you know, “traditional” heart rate monitors use a chest strap to take real time heart rate readings and transmit them to a watch or other recording/display device.

Strapless heart rate monitors, on the other hand, are just what they say. They did not require the use of a chest strap to give you heart rate information. They use sensitive electrodes on the face of the watch upon which the user places his or her fingers to take a reading.

Wearing a chest strap can be somewhat cumbersome, uncomfortable, and can slip out of position, leaving you no longer get any heart rate readings. It is also usually necessary to voice of the electrodes with something like an electrode cream, water, or saliva. The main benefit of using a heart rate monitor with a chest strap is that the readings that you are getting are constant and immediate.

When using a strapless heart rate monitor, the user has to take action in order to get a reading. That means if the person is running, for example, they may need to slow down or stop to place their fingers on the electrode buttons. Doing that means they have already lost some of their maximum heart rate as the heart begins to recover from the effort.

Despite that, the benefits of a strapless heart rate monitor are many. You don’t have the discomfort of wearing a strap (which are normally made of hard plastic), you don’t have to continually moisten anything, it is easier to get started with your exercise.

You can also wear the unit just as a sports watch or irregular watch, with the added advantage that you can take your heart rate measurement at any time throughout the day. If you’re sitting in a meeting, you can quietly monitor your heart rate to ensure you’re not getting too stressed.

Our choice for the best strapless heart rate monitor is the Reebok Impulse. It’s a reasonably priced unit packed with features. Those features include heart rate measurement, heart rate memory and recall, and lowest/highest heart rate readings. It also has sports watch functionality including chronograph, 42 lap memory, countdown timer, and a pacer mode. You can even use it as a normal watch because it includes time of day, a daily alarm, the dual time zone functions.

When making the decision of what type of heart rate monitor to purchase, consider how you will use it throughout the day. The benefit of a strapless heart rate monitor is that if you are already wearing a watch, no extra equipment is necessary to measure your heart rate. You will find yourself using it more often, because it is simpler and easier to use than a traditional heart rate monitor with chest strap.

A strapless heart rate monitor will set you free. You can exercise anywhere and everywhere without the cumbersome hassle of carrying or wearing an uncomfortable strap across your chest. Learn more at http://www.rypsports.com

Pharmaceutical Grade Fish Oil In Our Diets

Tuesday, July 31st, 2007

In todays highly refined, white bread, meat and sugar diet, omega-3s have been replaced almost exclusively by omega-6 fats such as corn, safflower and sunflower oils. Although these are good for you as well (and not to be confused with “bad for you” oils like anything that has been hydrogenated or with trans fat, including most margarines), they must be balanced with omega-3s at a ratio of 1:1 for optimal health. Today’s American diet typically contains omega-6s as compared to omega-3s in a ratio of 20:1 and upwards, even, of 50:1, so it is very unfortunately skewed in favor of omega-6s.

Specifically, omega-3 fats, especially concentrated in select fish, have been found to be beneficial to the brain and are therefore irreplaceably important. They also benefit other parts of the body such as the skin and heart.

Fish oil is comprised of two fatty acids, EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid). We need both for optimal health. DHA is the most prevalent polyunsaturated fat in the central nervous system and is especially important not just for adults, but for children’s proper neurological development. Pregnant moms especially are advised to ingest omega-3s for optimal fetal brain development especially during the third trimester where the most development takes place.

Lack of DHA has also been associated with everything from depression to schizophrenia to Alzheimer’s disease. It has even been touted in at least one British study to help children suffering from ADD, attention deficit disorder.

The reason behind DHA’s importance in brain health, especially, is that the brain is comprised almost entirely of fat, the most important of which is the omega-3s and improves communication between nerve synapses in the brain. DHA is believed to help increase serotonin levels in the brain; serotonin is a “feel good” hormone that chronically sad or depressed people are often found to be lacking in.

EPA, the other component in fish oil, also helps with depression, and is beneficial to the heart as well as to joint health, skin and more. Taking pharmaceutical grade fish oil can provide optimal supplementation of both fatty acids.

Omegas 3’s are essential fatty acids and can’t be produced by the body and must be supplemented through diet.

If you are a person that doesn’t consume large amounts of fish or doesn’t like fish,
supplementation with fish oil may be a better alternative.

The wild fish taken from lakes, streams, and the ocean may contain high levels of mercury, which is poisonous and should be avoided.

The omega- 3’s in Sealogix pharmaceutical grade fish oil are from fish located in some of the cleanest waters in the world from fisheries that are renewable and fully-sustainable. The fish oil is then molecularly distilled to concentrate and purify the oil, removing the contaminants.

These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration.

Childhood Obesity

Tuesday, July 31st, 2007

Obesity is quickly becoming an epidemic, not just in children but adults too. There are 40 million people in America that are obese. Approximately 15.3 percent of children (ages 6-11) and 15.5 percent of adolescents (ages 12-19) were overweight in 2000. An additional 15 percent of children and 14.9 percent of adolescents were at risk for overweight (based on BMI / body mass index measures).

Those are staggering statistics. Not only does obesity negatively affect a person’s self esteem, but it could very well become the leading cause of health related problems.

I know how devastating obesity can be. I watched my adopted sister go through it. She struggled with being overweight her whole life and now struggles with obesity. I remember her going through the being teased at school, the health problems, and self esteem issues.

So why is obesity such a problem today? Why has childhood obesity more than doubled? What can we do? Is it the lack of exercise that kids are getting? Is it the huge market of fast food? You see fast food advertisements all over the place, a lot of them are directed at kids. In food stores, they put the sweet, unhealthy food at eye level with children. Because of computers and television and video games, children simply don’t want to go out and play. I remember when I was a kid, all the kids in the neighborhood played from sunup to sundown, but that isn’t the case anymore. So what can we do to protect our children and their health? I ran onto an excellent site with good information on health and well being, the address is: http://www.angelscape.net Go to the E-Books section and then under the health section you will find an obesity guide.

Obesity has to be stopped. It needs to be treated like a serious disease that is sweeping America. I am not sure that is what the government, cooperations and pharmaceutical companies want though. After all, the fatter America is the more we’ll eat, and the fatter we are the more health problems we have. That means more sales in medication of the pharmaceutical companies, and it also means more people dying before their retirement.

Content Publishing - A Way to Earn Cash

Tuesday, July 31st, 2007

Everywhere you look on the Internet there are articles, including this one, dealing with making
money with content publishing. I’ll cover three in this article. First and foremost you can use
Google’s Adsense as a money generator. However, before you consider this option, you must
realize something.

Your articles must have original content. Do not fall into the trap of obtaining private label
content for use as context advertising for your website. To get the most benefit from your private
label articles, you must rewrite them and make them unique. Search engines love unique articles.
So do prospective customers. The uniqueness of your articles could be the thing that brings
customers to your site.

Because search engines love unique articles, they will give your site a higher ranking. This will
translate into more visitors and more clicks on your advertisements. Each click is revenue for
you.

The second way of using content articles, is as a traffic generator for your site. You can have a fantastic web site with great features, beautiful colors and even graphics, but if you don’t have any traffic, your site will not earn a penny for you. When you have a large number of unique,
well-written articles on numerous Article Directories, potential customers, even skimmers, will
notice your articles. By being unique, your articles will prompt people to read them. If they like
what they read, they will follow the link to your site. Because they like the style of your unique
articles, they are called “targeted” visitors. Targeted visitors are more likely to purchase the
products you have for sale. More sales mean more money for you.

Finally, if you have unique articles, you can become a ghost writer and sell these articles. There
is a great demand for ghost writers to produce articles, e-zines and e-books for online publishers.
If you don’t mind that you will not see your name in print, you can make a very good living as a
ghost writer.

Whichever of these three ways of content publishing you choose, your unique content articles
will put money in your pocket. And, after all, that is why you write in the first place, isn’t it?

How to Create Effective Autoresponders to Keep in Touch with Your Prospects

Tuesday, July 31st, 2007

I often suggest to clients that they use the power of business automation found in sequential autoresponders as an effective method of keeping in touch with their contacts. An autoresponder is an automated email response or series of responses that you have previously written and uploaded into an autoresponder service. The autoresponder enables you to reply to customers via email 24/7 without any intervention on your part past the setup stage. For example, you might send an automatic reply to a new newsletter subscriber, to someone who has requested a free giveaway on your site, or to a customer who has just purchased your newest information product.

Where do you find a sequential autoresponder service? Sometimes they’re bundled with shopping cart software. Or, you can purchase a stand-alone service in which you can set up autoresponders and send out your email newsletter, as well.

The two features that are essential to have in autoresponder software are personalization and tracking ability. For greatest effectiveness, you should be able to personalize your autoresponders both in the subject line as well as in the body of the email. Don’t you open email more quickly when you see your name in the subject line or when the body of the email mentions your address or city of residence? This personalization feature permits you to send automated emails that appear to have been written especially for the person receiving the email. I constantly receive both phone calls and email responses from prospects who are the recipients of these automated emails, which leaves me with no doubt about how important it is to personalize your responses. The second feature, tracking ability, enables you to see how many and which recipients opened your email, how many emails were not delivered, and the ability to see how many recipients clicked on any links found within the email.

Once my client has agreed to use sequential autoresponders, the next question usually is, “But what do I say in them?” Fact is, what you tell your clients is limited only by your imagination. However, I generally recommend that online business owners plan a sequence of 7-9 emails that go out over a series of 3 weeks. In this sequence, you need to check in with how the prospect/customer is doing with the call to action that got the prospect on your list, point out other pieces of free information on your website that would be useful to the prospect, recommend their own or affiliate products that would be of interest, and request another call to action of your prospect.

Here’s my outline of followup autoresponders that I send out when someone has requested a report from one of my sites:

Immediate send: Confirmation of and thank them for their request and remind them how to download the toolkit.

2 Days Later: Ask them what they think about the toolkit, point out some of the info that they might check out immediately, and request a testimonial.

5 Days Later: Offer another gift. I give them the URL of my articles directory and info about how they can syndicate my articles on their website at no charge and the benefits of doing so.

7 Days Later: Ask them to complete a survey. I created a short 30-second survey through SurveyMonkey.com that I ask them to complete. This helps me better understand what problems my target market has.

9 Days Later: Recommend a product. I change this offering occasionally and either recommend my one of my products or a product for which I’m an affiliate.

16 Days Later: Offer another gift. I tell them about my podcast and blog and why they should subscribe and how to do so.

19 Days Later: Ask me a question. I give them the opportunity to personally ask me a question about online marketing and let them know that I’ll respond to it in my blog.

23 Days Later: Make a special offer. I introduce them to my coaching services and offer them a special rate to try out my coaching.

Other offers you could make in your followup autoresponders include inviting them to a discussion forum or a free teleclass, have them subscribe to your ezine, or send them to download or view a free audio recording or video.

Creating an effective series of autoresponders helps you begin to develop a relationship with prospective customers, showcase your expertise, and ultimately convert prospects into customers.

Military Transition or Lifestyle Adjustment-Military Transition Tip

Tuesday, July 31st, 2007

Recently I ran across a civilian gentleman that asked,”How can
military transitioning can be complicated for a person
leaving the military?” Basically, he wanted for me to
define the term military transition to where he could
relate and understand the process. “It’s just changing jobs,
right?”, he asked.

Before I began explaining the process, I made sure that
he realized that the transitioning process we were addressing
could apply to police officers, firemen, EMTs, and any other
job that has it’s own lingo and culture.

In addition to the above occupations, a person who serves as
a teacher, a professor, a lawyer, an attorney, a public
official and every occupation you can think of goes through
some sort of transition once they no longer perform their
primary occupation.

We inevitably become like the people we work with and adopt
the thought process for that particular field. This thought
process then becomes a part of our lifestyle, identity,
vocabulary, and reasoning. The power of the thought process
and transformation of our identity in relation to our occupation
is underestimated. To put this theory to test, imagine taking a
30 day vacation and see how you feel by the 21st day. How
would your first day back to work feel? It takes 21 days
to acquire a habit. Would you feel out of place once you returned?

Once we separate ourselves from that occupation, our identity
is tested. Once we leave or change occupations, we undergo a
self-discovery phase with our identities and experience an
identity transformation process. There are several events that
can kick off a self-discovery process within us (i.e. new job,
new location, new career field, marriage, divorce, etc).

A transition is just that, a transition. Ask any retiree
(civilian or military). Amazingly so, a person leaving the
military not only goes through a transition with an occupation,
they go through a lifestyle transition as well. Then if the
person relocates, there are a host of transitions occurring
simultaneously. All of these changes can cause sensory overload
if the person isn’t prepared for the transition. (Hopefully this
analogy helps someone who hasn’t served in the military understand
that military transitioning is a combination of transitions).

Over the past year, I’m really glad to see more supporting
websites and businesses online for military transitioning.
There was a need and the need for military transitioning
services will increase with our brothers and sisters returning
from war. Some say there isn’t a war going on. If there is
blood being shed, that spells war to me and many others.

Food For Thought:

The lifestyle transition a military person experiences is the
transition of living within the civilian society. Our military
communities are very close knit. Imagine a base or post being a
little city with a population of approximately 2000 or less. A world
within a world, a microcosm in a macrocosm.

Transitions to Ponder:

1. Going from elementary school to junior high
2. Going from junior high school to high school.
3. Going from high school to college.
4. Graduating from college and entering the work force.
5. Leaving home.
6. Going from single to married.
7. Going from childless to having children.
8. Watching children grow up.
9. Watching children leave home.
10. Going from a full nest to an empty nest.
11. Retirement, etc…
12. Leaving the earth plane as a living being.

Transitions are inevitable. That’s living life.
