Uploading your first website can be a bit daunting at first. You buy a domain name somewhere, and then what? You have to FTP your website to a web host? Huh? Don\’t worry, it\’s very easy and I\’ve written out the steps for you in the simplest way possible. This article assumes a few things - you already have a website sitting on your desktop, in the form of an index.html file and perhaps a .css file and some images, depending.

I also assume that Hostgator is the best web host. There\’s plenty of debate about which one is the “best,” but I\’ve found them to have excellent customer support and to be extremely lacking in uneccesary frills and features. They are very raw, which ironically makes them much easier to use as long as you can get over your technophobia. OK, so you have your website ready to go, and you have a browser window open ready to follow along.

1. Go to Hostgator, and click on “Order Now” at the top. Go through the steps, buy a domain name, and select “Baby” when they ask you to choose a package. “Baby” allows unlimited domain names on the same account for $9.95 a month. Can\’t beat it.

2. After you\’re done, open Internet Explorer. Not Firefox, but Internet Explorer. In the web address field at the top, type “ftp://theusernameyouchose@thedomainnameyouchose.com” obviously replacing it with the Hostgator username you chose when you signed up and the domain name you bought for your website. Press ENTER. A window will pop up asking you for your username and password. Enter the ones you chose at Hostgator. Be aware that Hostgator only allows 8 character length usernames, so if you used something longer, they automatically truncated it.

3. You will now see a normal-looking window with some yellow folders. Double click the one that says “public_html.”

4. Shrink the window so you can see your desktop, and click and drag your website files from the desktop to the folder on Hostgator.

5. Depending on how big your website is, wait a few minutes.

You\’re done! Now, use your favorite browser to navigate to your new domain and you should see your website! Easy, wasn\’t it?
